clearing leaves from first trees
taking power from the greens
and from contours some sharpness
cautiously
refreshes grass with morning dew
scarcely tints the colours
reddens berries browns the foliage
sepia touch
wanders on with mounting sun

autumn just popped by today

Wow, thank you, this is so nice, and totally worth the work of translating (from my point of view anyway!). I could never have guessed at all the subtle ideas you express here. I’m thinking of my father now – he died in August, 30 years ago – and he spoke German, because his parents came here from Germany and they taught their three boys the language. So he would have appreciated this poem, in the original. I appreciate it here.
I love the idea of the first little signs of autumn – scarcely tinting the colors, taking some of green’s power away, just a touch of sepia, yes, like a dream. This also makes me think about how we are always so keen to notice the first signs of spring, but the first signs of autumn – no, they are not celebrated. So thank you for your celebration of that soft beginning of another season, hidden down in the strawberry plants.
